future
Sceptics have predicted in the past short lived success and slow growth
of motion design. Some still do. In my opinion, motion graphics’ future should be predicted in relation to other
related disciplines such as graphic design and motion pictures. For these forms there where doubters as well, who
believed that they would last in the field. History has proven them wrong though and is about to do it again for
motion graphics. Graphic design survived times of economic depression in the last two decades in a market filled
with graphic designers. Now, we can see history repeating with motion graphics. In times like this, when the economy
of whole world is in recession, demand for motion graphics seems to grow.

Demand for motion graphics grows coming from a variety of sources. Some of these areas of demand interrelate but they still are separate.
- DVDs are popular not only because of their better-quality (compared to video cassettes), but also because they also offer extra content (i.e. behind-the-scenes, choice of subtitles, chapters). The motion designers are the ones who to create the DVD interface design.
- Video games quality is constantly increasing. Both programmers and motion graphic artists are needed to reach the end result of the game. One or more individuals may operate in both fields, or not.
- TV adverts increasingly incorporate motion graphics into the video. Some adverts are even produced entirely by motion graphics.
- More and more music videos (video-clips) contain motion graphics as well. Like TV adverts, some consist of solely motion graphics and others combine video with motion graphics.
These are just few of the areas of demand for motion graphics. Others include computer programmes, TV identities, concert projections and business presentations. Even if some of those sources experience a decrease in demand, others will remain, and offer motion graphic designers work.
Stephen Price agrees; he finds motion graphics industry to be growing.
He concludes; “Motion graphics fits perfectly into today’s market because the tools are cheap, easy to learn and fast. Designers can kick out work quicker and cheaper and that makes clients happy.” For him, the breaking point is only that “amazing new studios keep popping up and brilliant students keep graduating.”
