A new generation of poets using the web:Part 2

Jay Bernard, is another young poet whose work cris crosses different mediums. She publishes her poetry in print, online, writes a blog and contributes to electronic 'zines', where her poetry is written alongside comic book like illustrations. Budo

I caught up with her again performing at the Soho theatre.

After the show she explained to me that her website and blog allowed her communicate with an audience that she may not of been able to reach otherwise.

It seems that this is the fundamental benefit that the Internet offers poetry. While poetry has always had its devotees, the democratic nature of the Internet allows a far wider audience to gain access to writing. While poetry was part of popular culture in France in the 1920s and 1930s and then part of a wider popular youth culture of the 1960s, its audience since then has slowly shrank. However, if the relationship between poetry and the Internet continues as it has begun, poetry may well lose its niche status that it has borne for too long.
