Terminology

A brief description of some of the terms used in this article:

  • Avatar
  • Is the players character represented in the form of a 3D model that is used in computer games. Players can customise their alter ego of himself/ herself by changing the colour of hair, gender, clothing, skin colour etc.

  • Hiscore
  • On the Runescape homesite is a Hiscore section where every player who has achieved a certain amount of xp points will be placed on the Hiscore table. For a few years player 'Zezima' held the number 1 position but has now dropped down several places despite his xp being the highest above all others.

  • Hitpoints
  • The more you kill other monsters you will gain xp to your life points. If you are Level 75 in Hitpoints (HP) and you get hit by a monster that dealt 22HP, you will have 53HP. When your HP goes to zero, you will die and respawn at Lumbridge castle or another respawning location.

  • Jagex
  • Formed by Andrew Gower, his brother Paul and Constant Tedder in December 2001 to look after the commercial operation of Runescape. In 2002 Jagex launched the members version of the game and within the first week over 5000 people subscribed. To view more information about Jagex Ltd click here

  • Melee, Magic, Ranged
  • These are 3 different combat attacks which players can level-up. If you focus on Magic, this is strong when fighting those that Melee and the outfit you would have would be wizard robes for example. Melee is hand combat for close range attacks using weapons and armour and is useful against Ranged opponents. Ranged is using projectile weapons such as arrows, knives and is effective against Magic opponents.

  • MMORPG
  • Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. A genre of computer role-playing games with a large number of players that interact with each other in a virtual world.   • MUD
  • Multi User Dungeon, Domain or Dimension. It is a multi-player game which is typically text-driven, descriptions can be read of the computer controlled characters, objects, rooms etc. Click Here to view more information about MUD

  • PvP
  • Player verses Player. Instead of player killing computer characters, the player can battle and kill another player but only in the Wilderness where they can lose all their belongings. If they use special Prayer, this can protect the 4 most valuable items. There is also the Duel arena, Clans war mini game which is more safer as you won't lose any of your items.

  • WOW
  • World of Warcraft. With over 11 million subscribers this is the biggest pay per play MMORPG in the world. Created by Blizzard Entertainment games company they release new expansion packs, the latest being 'Wrath of the Lich King' released 13/11/2008. To find out more information about WOW click here
